How glow in the dark tape works

Glow in the dark (photoluminescent) tape marks steps, exits and obstacles when the lights go out — with no wiring, batteries or electricity. Here is how it works and how to choose the right product.
The science in brief
Photoluminescent pigments absorb energy from visible and ultraviolet light. When the light source disappears, they release that stored energy slowly as a visible glow, which fades gradually over time. The product can be recharged again and again simply by exposure to light.
Charging time
Our glow in the dark anti slip tape takes approximately 2 hours to charge in natural or artificial light. Brighter light charges faster, so install glow products where they are regularly exposed to daylight or room lighting.
Which glow product to choose
- Glow in the dark anti slip tape — grip plus visibility for stairs, ramps and walkways.
- Glow in the dark PVC tape — a smooth tape for marking doors, walls, handrails and edges.
- Die-cut glow shapes — arrows, dots and strips to guide people along escape routes.
- Luminous stair nosing — a durable aluminum step edge with an anti-slip surface and photoluminescent strips.
Where to use it
Typical places are stairwells, escape routes, exit doors, corridors, loading ramps, machine areas, vehicles, pool steps and outdoor steps at night. Because it needs no power, photoluminescent marking keeps working during power failures.
Tips for best performance
- Install where the product receives regular light
- Keep the surface clean — dirt reduces both charging and glow
- Combine with reflective and marking tape for areas lit by headlights or torches
