How to apply anti slip tape

Most anti slip tape failures come from the installation, not the tape. A clean, dry surface and firm pressure make the difference between tape that lasts and tape that lifts at the edges. Always check the instructions supplied with the specific product.
What you need
- Anti slip tape or pre-cut treads
- A cleaner or degreaser suitable for the surface, and a clean cloth
- A tape measure, sharp knife or scissors
- A hand roller (or firm hand pressure)
Step 1: Clean and dry the surface
Remove dirt, dust, oil, wax and loose paint. Degrease the surface and let it dry completely — adhesive cannot bond to moisture or contamination. Porous surfaces such as concrete and wood may need a primer.
Step 2: Check the temperature
Apply in mild, dry conditions. Adhesives bond poorly when the surface or the tape is cold, so avoid applying in freezing weather or onto a cold surface.
Step 3: Measure, cut and round the corners
Measure the area, cut the tape to length and round the corners slightly. Rounded corners are much less likely to catch on shoes and start peeling.
Step 4: Peel and press firmly
Peel back a short section of the liner, position the tape and press it down while removing the rest of the liner. Then press firmly over the whole surface with a roller, working from the center to the edges to remove air.
Step 5: Seal the edges where needed
In wet areas, outdoors or where carts and pallet trucks pass, sealing the edges helps prevent water and wear from lifting the tape. Allow the adhesive time to build its bond before exposing it to heavy traffic or water.
Common mistakes
- Applying to a damp, dusty or freshly cleaned but still wet surface
- Stretching the tape during application
- Leaving square corners on high-traffic edges
- Using gritted tape where people walk barefoot — use non-abrasive tape instead
